Phillip, this is a really insightful analysis that links political developments to religious ones, through the use of that helpful concept of purging. I think you're exactly right: the drive to rid the Republican party of anyone but true believers goes hand in hand with a precisely parallel process in some churches today.

And that raises the question, Why? Why do social groups, including those that claim to be all about love, feel this intent need to purge their ranks of anyone but the "pure"? And why this intent need right now?

There is obviously a sense on the part of some of these groups that they are losing ground, and so there's a desperation to reorganize themselves around the most hard-line message possible. The attempt in and of itself indicates a certain amount of desperation, though it's clothed in triumphalistic language that makes it appear to be a sign of strength and not of weakness.

I think we'll see more and more of this desperation in this period in which health care reform is being considered. Those engaged in these tactics are fighting a desperate battle. And they intend to fight tooth and nail.

Like most people I speak with- few are aware... I have to admit to my ignorance regarding this debacle...However - I changed that please see www.vaticanvalues.wordpress.com.
Again, many thanks~

I take particular offense to the idea that abortion can ever be a valid choice from examination of one's conscience. Please see CCC 1783-1785.

Science has determined that a fertilized egg is a unique human being (different DNA and Chromosomes from either father or mother = unique human being). Scripture says that God knew us in the womb and has a plan for us. The Church authoritatively teaches, since the earliest times, that abortion is intrinsically evil. These are the things that should guide our conscience, and when they authentically do the case is closed, no need for debate...
